Here at the Center for Foot Care, we offer Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy, or ESWT for short! Check out this small clip our podiatrist, Dr. Titko, briefly describe what this therapy can ultimately do for you!

So, what exactly is ESWT?

Like Dr. Titko mentioned above, shock wave therapy is a noninvasive method. The therapy triggers the body’s own repair mechanisms resulting in increased tendon elasticity, vascularization, and blood flow to enhance tendon healing; in addition, the sound wave therapy creates a pain relieving effect.

Why would you need ESWT?

ESWT can treat conditions such as Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.

What are some general details of the procedure?

A noninvasive probe is applied to the skin. An electrical charge creates an energy wave that is focused on the area of concern. The shock waves create a force on the tissues that may induce healing. It’s not clear why this approach to healing works for some people, but it may be that shock waves cause inflammation and improve blood flow to encourage the body to repair and heal itself. So what happens after the procedure is finished?

Patients are advised to reduce the level of physical activity for one to two weeks after treatment, but that’s pretty much it!

Seems pretty great! But is it a substitute for surgery?

It can help avoid surgery. Treatment responses can vary!

ESWT has an 85% success rate, comparable to its invasive counter parts, without the risk of scarring or infection and in most cases back to your normal activities the next day!
