Yes, they’re adorable. But they’re also growing and changing at a rapid pace, just like the rest of your baby. Here’s how to take care of your baby’s feet so they can grow into healthy kids, teens, and eventually adults.

  • First, make sure that socks, booties, footed pajamas, etc. aren’t so tight they they’re cutting off circulation to the foot. Since babies grow so fast, it’s important to check for this often.
  • Unless they’re walking, babies obviously don’t need shoes. But if you must buy that cute little pair of soft-soled Chuck Taylors, make sure they aren’t too small or tied too tight. A baby’s foot is broad and flat, so look for lightweight, bendable shoes with soft soles.
  • As with adult nails, trim your baby’s toenails right across in a straight manner using special clippers especially for babies. Baby nails are less brittle than adult nails, so you won’t need to use as much force to cut them, and babies also rarely lie still when they’re awake, so be very careful to go slowly and not nick them with clippers.
  • When you bathe your baby, make sure you wash in between their toes. Baby toes are tiny and curved in most of the time, so taking the time to clean between them will help them stay fresh. At a certain point, babies will find their feet and nibble on their own toes – so keep any germs and odor from building up with regular, thorough washing.
