Winter can bring with it a lot of hazards, but one of the biggest is the risk of slippery roads and sidewalks, especially if you live in an area prone to ice and snow. Here are some tips for keeping yourself upright – and keeping your feet healthy – in cold weather.

  1. Invest in appropriate winter boots.

Wearing sneakers in cold conditions can be a recipe for disaster, as they won’t give you the protection from the elements you need. Take some time to select a good pair of winter boots that will keep your feet safe all through the season.

  • If your feet get wet as well as cold, you could end up suffering from unpleasant afflictions such as chilblains. Make sure your boots are fully waterproof.
  • Toasty feet inside warm socks are more susceptible to sweating, which can lead to bacterial infections. Use foot powder and wash your feet regularly.
  1. Avoid wearing heels outside.

They may look good in the store, but there’s no point in being fashionable if you’re stuck at home with a sprained ankle or worse. It’s very easy to slip and fall if you wear heels in slippery conditions, so think smart and only change into those shoes once you’re out of the snow.

  • Fashion shoes often have smooth soles, which are risky when it’s icy. Either attach rubber adhesive soles or scuff them up a little yourself to add grip.
  • If you do fall, make sure you see your podiatrist for advice on what treatment you need. In the meantime, keep your weight off the injured ankle and use ice and compression.
  1. Take things slow and steady.

However good your boots may be, you’re asking for trouble if you run around the like you would in summer. Walk steadily and smoothly, avoiding sudden movements. This simple precaution can guard against the risk of torn ligaments and sprains.

  • If you’re out after dark, stick to well-lit paths and skirt around any patches of ice. Keep the area around your own doorway as dry and ice-free as possible.
  • In cold weather, it’s even more important than usual to warm up and stretch before any vigorous exercise or sports. Be sure to practice stopping without sliding.
