Hammertoes | Center for Foot Care

At the Center for Foot Care, we specialize in the treatment of hammertoes, a common foot condition that affects the alignment of the toes. Hammertoes can cause discomfort and impact your ability to walk and wear shoes comfortably.

Causes of Hammertoes

Hammertoes are genetic/hereditary in nature.  Occasionally, injuries or trauma to the toe can also contribute to the development of hammertoes.

Symptoms of Hammertoes

The most common symptom of hammertoes is the bending or curling of the affected toes. This can lead to pain or discomfort while walking or wearing shoes. Corns or calluses may also develop on the affected toes, and you may experience limited range of motion in those toes.

Treatment Options for Hammertoes

Non-surgical treatments

Non-surgical treatment options for hammertoes include wearing proper footwear that provides adequate support and room for the toes. Orthotic devices or non-medicated cushions or pads and shoes with extra-depth, can also help alleviate symptoms.

Surgical options

In cases where non-surgical treatments are ineffective, surgical intervention may be necessary. Arthroplasty, arthrodesis, and tendon transfer are some of the surgical procedures that can be performed to correct hammertoes.
